Austin Nichols Departure Points To Major Issues At Memphis

By: Anthony Sain ( @ SainAsylum )

Last week Junior Forward Austin Nichols transferred from the University of Memphis Basketball team becoming the seventh player to do so within a year. This of course comes a blow to the program considering that Nichols would have been returning as the team leader in points and shot blocks. Nichols was on pace to have a great season this year and his game was growing leaps in bounds after being spotlighted as the Tigers focus on both offense and defense. Before the Memphis Grizzlies made their debut during their inaugural season back in 2001, there was much concern about whether or not the city could support both an NBA franchise as well as a college basketball team with a cemented history in the city. The University of Memphis Tiger Football team was never factored into that equation, mainly because they had been a historically bad team, and produced abysmal attendance numbers over the years. I had friends and family that were Vols fans but I refused to support the Orange, regardless of the state affiliation. Whenever a college football video game would come out, I would always play as the Tigers in the franchise modes and build them into a championship contender, landing top recruits. I knew that this was all just fantasy and that the local college football team would never be worth talking about after October. Until last year.
